How to Know if Laser Treatments Are Right for You

Many cosmetic procedures that were once invasive or required surgery are now available without surgery, incisions, or long recovery periods thanks to laser technology. Depending on your goals, you can now improve the quality of aging or damaged skin or eliminate scarring with comfortable, non-invasive outpatient laser procedures.

At Rick J. Smith, MD, plastic surgeon Dr. Smith and our team offer a range of laser services and cosmetic treatments at our office in East Lansing, Michigan.

Is cosmetic laser treatment right for you?

There are several laser treatment services available, many of which are completely non-invasive, requiring little to no downtime after treatment. Lasers deliver safe and targeted light and heat energy and are commonly used to improve skin imperfections and damage related to aging, sun, or scarring.

For example, if you have acne scars or noticed fine lines and wrinkles or loose skin, you may benefit from a laser skin resurfacing treatment.

Every skin type is different, so the ideal treatment for you depends on unique factors like whether you have sensitive skin, your age, health profile, and goals.  If you’re considering laser treatment, the first step is to schedule an appointment with our team for a consultation.

What can be treated with lasers?

Some of the most common skin and cosmetic issues that can be improved with laser treatments include:

Laser treatments are generally designed to make subtle but noticeable improvements to your skin. It’s best if you’re looking for a non-surgical, non-invasive alternative to other cosmetic procedures like a facelift

Types of lasers used in cosmetic treatments

There are two categories of lasers for resurfacing and cosmetic treatments: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative lasers remove surface layers of skin, so they’re an excellent option for sun damage, acne scars, and mild to moderate fine lines and wrinkles.

Depending on your treatment, you will use ointments immediately after your procedure as your skin rejuvenates and will need to avoid strenuous activities for  several days.

Non-ablative lasers use heat energy to improve the skin’s texture and appearance from minor cosmetic damage but don’t remove surface skin cells. These lasers are a gentler alternative to ablative lasers, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Like any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to have realistic expectations about your results and to continue to keep up a healthy lifestyle, including diet, exercise, and avoiding smoking and sun exposure.

Some procedures require multiple sessions, and the results from laser resurfacing treatments are usually not permanent as the skin continues to change with age. Laser treatments may not be right for you if you’re pregnant or nursing, have certain underlying health conditions, are prone to scarring, or are taking certain medications.
