Bothered by Scars? Consider Laser Therapy

Whether they develop due to acne, surgery, an accident, or a burn, scars are common. However, thanks to technology, some scars don’t have to be permanent (or as prominent) thanks to laser resurfacing treatments.

At Rick J. Smith, MD, our plastic surgeon Dr. Rick Smith and our team of aesthetic specialists offer a range of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic services and procedures at our office in East Lansing, Michigan.

How laser therapy can help with your scars

Depending on the type of scar, laser therapy can target and remove the damaged cells to reveal smoother, fresher skin. The best part about laser therapy is that it’s a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure, so you don’t have to worry about an invasive treatment and lengthy recovery period.

Laser therapy works best on superficial scarrings, like the type you get from acne, small cuts, light surgical scars, and mild burns. Depending on your skin’s condition, Dr. Smith and our team may recommend a combination of treatments like laser therapy and an injectable or filler like Botox® or Juvederm® to help rejuvenate the skin around the treatment area.

Does laser therapy fully remove scars?

The results will vary from person to person depending on the type and severity of your scar. But as with any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to have realistic expectations for your scar removal treatment. Laser therapy can minimize scar tissue to the point where it’s barely noticeable, but it may not completely remove all visible traces of the scar.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the skill of your plastic surgeon and aesthetic specialists is one of the most important factors to consider when getting laser therapy (or any cosmetic procedure).

What else can laser therapy be used for?

If you’re one of the many people who have one or more tattoos and now regret it, laser therapy can also be used to gently and safely remove them. In addition to treating scars, laser therapy is also used to rejuvenate skin and treat sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and other common skin problems like freckle and mole removal.
