5 Skin-Enhancing Benefits of Microneedling

You might be surprised by how feeling good about your appearance affects your interactions with others. When you’re happy with your look, you tend to smile more, be perceived as more open, and you may also unconsciously behave more confidently. But, when you’re concerned with dark spots, wrinkles, dull-looking skin, or other problems with your appearance you may be less likely to chat with people, to enjoy social situations, or to speak up at work.

Rick J. Smith, MD and his team understand what it means to be sure of yourself and confident in your appearance, and we offer numerous services to help you do just that. One of the most popular services offered by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Smith, is microneedling. In this post, we present five of the benefits you can expect if you choose to improve your appearance with this service.

How microneedling works

Before we get to the benefits of microneedling, you may be wondering what it is, exactly. Microneedling is a process that harnesses your body’s natural healing properties and uses it to reduce the signs of aging and to promote healthy skin.

When you have the procedure, we first use a cream to numb your skin. Then we use a special roller tool that has hundreds of tiny needles on the area you’re having treated. The needles made “micro” wounds, which is the reason it’s called microneedling.

The tiny wounds prompt your body to begin the healing process, even though they are very small. Your body begins to produce extra collagen and elastin, as well as new skin cells. All of that improves the appearance of your skin, leaving you looking brighter, fresher, and firmer.

1. Reducing the appearance of fine lines

Do you feel annoyed by the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? You don’t have to live with them. Microneedling is a safe way to diminish signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Scars, such as from acne, and stretch marks

One of the most common reasons people have microneedling performed is to lessen the appearance of scars or stretch marks. Usually people think of microneedling as a treatment for the face, and it primarily is used that way; but it can also be done on your thighs or abdomen to treat stretch marks.

3. Age spots or sun spots

Do you have dark spots due to sun damage or aging? Microneedling can help you gain a more even skin tone and make those spots less noticeable.

4. Firmer skin

Collagen and elastin are the reason your skin looks taut and firm. As you get older, your body makes less of them, and you may begin to notice drooping. Microneedling stimulates your body to make more collagen and elastin and the result is less sagging.

5. There’s no down time

Unlike with some cosmetic procedures, you don’t need to go home right away and recover after microneedling. You may experience some bleeding during the procedure, and it’s possible to have some mild bruising afterward, but you can go on about your normal daily activities.
