Rick J. Smith, MD, FACS
Dr. Smith is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in a variety of delicate surgical procedures. Practicing since 1993, Dr. Smith has extensive experience with procedures including facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty, aesthetic breast surgery, and body contouring. His approach to plastic surgery is polished and refined as a result of his seasoned experience.
Known for his empathetic approach and unflappable nature, Dr. Smith takes pride in improving his patients’ lifestyles. His goal is to empower his patients to defocus on their insecurities and refocus on living the lives they want.
Associations & Memberships
Dr. Smith is a long-standing member of the distinguished American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Aesthetic Society. These prestigious memberships require him to be board-certified and to take continuing medical training credits, as well as completing a certain number of aesthetic surgeries every year. Dr. Smith is one of only two Michigan members of the Rhinoplasty Society. He is also an assistant professor at Michigan State University and often trains students on rotation.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Kalamazoo College and his medical degree from the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, Dr. Smith completed general and plastic surgery training at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. He pursued an additional year of craniofacial training, working with the world-renowned Dr. Ian T. Jackson.
Dr. Smith has authored numerous papers and traveled widely describing new techniques in aesthetic surgical procedures and reconstructive techniques, efforts that have lead to advances in treatment and healing.

Keeping the office energy upbeat, our registered nurse, Michelle, knows what it takes to keep our patients safe, comfortable, and confident. With an in-depth knowledge of plastic surgery and emergency medicine, she is a reliable partner to Dr. Smith and a dependable resource to our patients. Michelle also runs our laser and injectables department.
Our surgical coordinator, Kristin, makes the surgical scheduling process seamless. Whether you’re scheduling your procedure in our surgical facility or at the hospital, she will tailor the plan to fit your needs and make sure your surgical experience is as stress-free as possible. Kristin flawlessly explains the cost of your procedure, payment options, and what to expect. We're known for being extremely personable and exceptionally quick in getting our patients the answers they need.
Our best patient advocate is our expert insurance biller, Robbin. In fact, she likely knows more about your insurance company than you do! Robbin knows how to go to bat for our patients and get things done. She will work with your insurance company, so you can focus on your surgery. If you have a question about your insurance, Robbin has the answer.
The job title, medical assistant, doesn’t come close to capturing what Karen does. She is our medical jack-of- all-trades. You will see her in the clinic and our operating room, but mostly you will feel what she does. She keeps our organization's infrastructure perfectly tuned and running smoothly.
Our nurse anesthetist, Martha is unsurpassed in her field. She started her career as an anesthetist in the Army and learned their precise practices of patient care and continues to follow those lessons today. You will meet Martha on the day of your surgery and will immediately know you’re in good hands.
Cheryl’s career has strictly been in the field of plastic surgery. She met Dr. Smith the first day he came to the area as a member of MSU Department of Surgery. When he started his private practice, Cheryl was by his side. She has since moved through the ranks of the organization and now runs it. She is our trusted advisor.
